Our Services

  • Skin-Deep Realism.

We specialize in the design and manufacture of high-end prosthetic appliances that move as naturally as the actor’s own skin. From subtle age-progression and character likenesses to extreme creature transformations, our studio produces seamless pieces in medical-grade silicone, foam latex, and gelatin. We handle the entire pipeline: from life-casting the actor to final on-set application.

  • Form Defined by Detail.

Every project begins at the tip of a tool. Our sculptors specialize in high-fidelity character design, anatomical accuracy, and bespoke prop fabrication. Using traditional clay methods and digital 3D sculpting, we translate 2D concepts into tactile, three-dimensional masterpieces, from hyper-realistic human likenesses to otherworldly creature textures.

  • The Final Layer of Realism.

This stage is among one of the most exciting points in a project, as we truly start to see our work come to life here. We apply our paints in carefully built layers to achieve the highest level of realism and depth. Our specialized techniques are combined with the expertise of painters who have honed their craft for decades.

  • Precision Grooming and Texture.

From primal beasts to hero-grade hairpieces, our fur and hair department focuses on the microscopic details. We handle custom hair punching, flocking, and complex "fur-grooming" to achieve realistic density and natural movement. By hand-applying individual fibers and specialized synthetics, we ensure your creatures have the tactile weight and realism required for close-ups.

  • The Engineering of Life.

We bridge the gap between sculpture and soul. Our animatronic combine custom mechanical engineering, skeletal rigging, and fluid organic movement to create creatures, puppets, and characters that interact with actors in real-time. Whether it's subtle facial twitches or full-scale motorized monsters, we build beings that breathe.

How it started

We were founded by Ellie Rowlands and Nerida Karlen, both immigrants to Canada who bring uniquely diverse skill sets to the world of practical effects. Ellie’s expertise lies in miniatures and props, whereas Nerida brings a new level of artistry to monster makeup.

By chance, both women moved to Vancouver and crossed paths while working at the same FX shop. Over the years, they have collaborated on many major productions such as Shōgun, Peacemaker, and The Stand- refining their craft and developing an unmatched synergy.

Eventually, they felt it was time to join forces and create something of their own. Empress FX was born from a passion for art, and whilst they continue to push the boundaries of Practical FX they make sure they have a bloody good time doing it!

Nerida Karlen

Founder

Nerida began her Makeup FX journey in Australia, making a name for herself through intricate gore effects and striking creature designs. Over the years, she has since contributed to some of BC's most impressive productions, including ‘SEE’, ‘Deadpool’, and ‘The Grudge’, not to mention the FX for Juno award-winning ‘ARCHSPIRE’s music videos. Nerida’s passion for innovative problem-solving, mixed with an unyielding dedication, makes her a true force in the industry.

Ellie ROWLANDS

Founder

Ellie started her career overseas in London, UK. In her career, she has worked in a variety of departments—set dressing, prop making, and puppetry to name a few. She worked on renowned films like Wes Anderson’s ‘Isle of Dogs’, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, and ‘Game of Thrones’. Her proudest credit to date, however, might just be adding snow to the Hogwarts Castle model! Shes obsessed with all things miniature and perfecting fine details. Ellie brings an unrivalled precision to every project.
